Sophia is currently undertaking postgraduate level sociolinguistic research on Uyghur language education in Xinjiang. This research looks specifically at language education policy and its potential to contribute and enhance ethnic tensions in Xinjiang. Within the broader framework of societal versus national security, this topic ties the language and identity discourse with human security research, presenting an example that challenges the assumption that education as a resource fosters prosperous, stable and more tolerant societies.
