Diana Espirito Santo was born in London, England, and holds British and Portuguese citizenship. She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the London School of Economics, and her Ph.D in 2009 at University College London under the guidance of Prof. Roland Littlewood and Dr. Martin Holbraad. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Universidade Nova in Lisbon. Her ethnographic interests include apprenticeship and forms of knowledge in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian religious and spiritist practices, the impact of migration and movement on religious experiences, spirit possession and mediation, notions of personhood and self, oracles and divination, materiality, and dreams. Her theoretical interests include developing an ecological approach to the anthropology of religious learning that allows for the inclusion of both radically relative and universal dimensions of human religious experience.
